The WW1 German Battlecruiser SMS Scharnhorst has been located off the Falkland Islands in a major search breakthrough.

The Scharnhorst was the flagship of Admiral Maximilian Graf von Spee’s East Asia Squadron. The ship was sunk on 8 December 2014 during the Battle of the Falkland Islands. The search for the vessel has been ongoing since 2014 and was organized by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust.
