P-51D "Roto-Finish" Build Log-Propeller work begins

Plenty of scale model kits come with single assembly propeller and spinner to allow for quick builds and provides proper alignment of the blades. This kit is no exception with the exception of the backplate for the spinner which comes separate. Since I’ll have to be sanding quite a bit to create a smooth seem I am going to work on refinishing the spinner and cleanup each propeller separate to help add more detail.

For removal I used the jeweler’s saw to make a close angle cut and the cleanup can begin with the flash and detailing. The front of the cowling will need some cleanup (I will hollow out the lower nose scoop) and the alignment portion will definitely need some work to get it back together just right.

A friend of mine who is a great photographer sent me some photos while I work out decal plans. This view shows the detail around the propeller and the spinner and also the intake. This photo also shows the fine line between the spinner and the rear portion of it which is removable for mechanics when working on the adjustable spinner components.

I created a mounting point with a small drill-bit which I will use later to allow the propeller to spin freely. This also gives me an alignment point to ensure the spinner can line up smoothly with the body profile.

With the spinner attached you can see the fast profile available on the Mustang. The modified canopy will really set this kit apart from a traditional P-51D Mustang profile and looking forward to getting the prop permanently mounted.
